Parent Giving

Kehillah began in 2002-2003 with 33 students at a rented facility in San Jose.

What was then only a dream in the minds of a small group of parents and founders is today a successful, dynamic community of 160 high school students and 36 faculty and staff members.

This extraordinary accomplishment is due to the families who believe in the mission of the school as well as the continued generous support of our donors. Because there is a gap between tuition and the actual cost of a Kehillah education, your financial support of Kehillah is essential to ensure our leadership role in innovative high school education. A Kehillah education, with its unique and engaging curriculum, extraordinary teachers and outstanding programming, ignites a passion for learning in our students and inspires them to become leaders in both the Jewish and global communities  The resources and benefits available to our students and faculty are the result of the vision and generosity of many Kehillah parents, alumni, alumni parents, grandparents and friends. Every gift to Kehillah helps us to attain our goal of continuing to provide the best possible education for our students. Thank you for your interest in joining our community of supporters and helping Kehillah maintain our standard of excellence.

Parent Giving FAQ

Q

How does Kehillah Parent Giving work?

A

Every fall, parent volunteers ask fellow parents ― through mailings, phone-a¬thons and in person ― for an annual contribution. Annual contributions, which are tax deductible, usually come in the form of pledges, cash, credit cards or securities. Because the fiscal year closes on June 30, we ask that all gifts be paid by June 15, 2014.
We ask each family to participate at a level appropriate to their circumstances, and expect that Kehillah is their highest philanthropic priority while their children are students here.

Every gift, regardless of its size, is important to Kehillah.

Q

What are methods of giving to Kehillah?

A

Gifts of cash are the most common form of support. Checks should be made payable to Kehillah Jewish High School.

Kehillah also accepts VISA, MasterCard or Discover. Donors can arrange for monthly payments through their credit card.

Many donations also qualify for corporate matches. The donor should obtain a matching gift form from their company's personnel office or foundation, fill it in where required, and mail it to the Development Office with their gift.
Securities and stocks may also be donated.

Not only is the full fair-market value of the security as of the date of the gift generally tax deductible, but you may avoid all capital gains taxes.

Q

What does Kehillah Parent Giving support?

A

Contributions support Kehillah’s people, programs and facilities. This includes all aspects of Kehillah’s education and co-curricular programs: teachers’ salaries; tuition assistance, which helps preserve a school community of diverse backgrounds; community service programs; experiential learning programs; athletics; school building maintenance; and much more.

Q

How much is spent on financial aid each year?

A

Due to the strains of the current economic downturn, this year we are awarding over 1 million dollars in tuition assistance. Our tuition assistance program is strong and committed to ensuring that all qualified students have the opportunity of a Kehillah education, regardless of their financial means.

Q

Why should I give to Kehillah Parent Giving when I already pay tuition?

A

While tuition covers significant costs, your donation supplements the differences between tuition income and the cost of running a first-rate college preparatory institution such as Kehillah. Unlike public schools, independent schools operate without any financial support from the local tax base or from state or national governments. Kehillah relies solely on tuition income and annual contributions to cover its operating costs.

Q

Why is full participation necessary and important to Kehillah Parent Giving?

A

Full parent participation demonstrates solidarity within the Kehillah community. It also indicates to corporations, foundations, major donors and friends that those who are most connected to Kehillah are committed to its future well-being. Therefore, all gifts are tremendously important.

Each year, we strive to increase participation levels among the parent body.

Parent participation in the 2012-2013 Annual Fund was 70 percent. Our goal this year is 100 percent.

Q

Do parents who donate their time to Kehillah support Kehillah Parent Giving?

A

Kehillah is indebted to many volunteers who contribute their time, energy, advice and talent. Many of the programs unique to Kehillah would not be possible without the dedication of our parents. However, economic realities force every non-profit educational institution to confront the fact that actual “cash in hand” also helps to support the school. It is our hope that every family participates in supporting the costs of a Kehillah for every student.
